SUMMARY:Joanne Harris: Sleepers In The Snow
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with international bestselling author Joanne Harris as she talks about her latest book\, Sleepers in the Snow\, set in the beautiful but eerie North Yorkshire Moors. A powerful novel of love\, loss\, mystery and dementia\, perfect for those dark winter nights\, when a story beckons. \nOut on the moor\, in the snow\, a house stands beneath a pylon. It is a house full of memories\, and full of old things. And\, in the dark\, when the pylon sings in the wind\, it is a house full of ghosts and fading memories… \nThe house\, Kirkhill\, has a new occupant – just moved in\, fresh from a bitter divorce and looking for a fresh start. The moor is the perfect place for it: isolated\, beautiful in the changing seasons\, peaceful\, and with just enough of the previous owners’ belongings that it’s a perfectly self-contained and cosy home.\nOnly as the nights start to draw in\, and the weather takes a turn\, so does the house. The cosy isolation becomes menacing\, animals begin acting strangely\, and it seems someone could be watching the house… and the diaries of the previous owners begin to reveal a terrible tragedy which befell Kirkhill – one which its new occupant may be unable to escape… \nJoanne Harris (OBE\, FRSL)\, winner of the Creative Freedom Award\, the Whitaker Gold Award\, and the Glenfiddich Award\, is the author of twenty novels\, three cookbooks and many short stories. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature\, an honorary Fellow of St Catharine’s College\, Cambridge\, was Chair of the Society of Authors between 2020 and 2024\, and in 2022 was awarded an OBE by the Queen. She was born in Barnsley in Yorkshire and grew up above her grandparents’ sweet shop. \n  \nHOME \n \nBUY THE BOOK

SUMMARY:Julian O’ Neill – The Lines We Cross: Finding local war heroes and how this book evolved.
DESCRIPTION:What might happen when men who fought alongside one another in the First World War returned home to Ireland and found themselves in another kind of conflict? All are welcome to come and hear Julian talk about the research and creation of his first historical novel. \nThe novel begins at the Somme in 1916 and follows the main characters through the turbulent years ahead. \nEighteen-year-old Ulsterman Billy McBride leaves his family farm for the battlefields of the Somme\, where a single encounter changes three lives forever. \nRuari O’Donnell\, a young Catholic with a dark secret\, saves Billy’s life\, not knowing that fate will bring them together once more…on opposite sides of another conflict. \nMarion Maguire\, pregnant and alone after being unwittingly abandoned\, faces devastating loss and unthinkable choices that lead her from a Magdalene laundry to a world of gunrunners and rebels. \nThe Lines We Cross brings the killing fields of France and the turbulent struggle for Irish Independence vividly to life. \nAn evocative and visceral novel that doesn’t shy away from the realities of war and conflict. \nJulian was born and brought up in Northern Ireland\, trained as a dentist\, and worked for six years in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery before specialising in orthodontics. He became an NHS Consultant in Northamptonshire\, where he still lives. \nHe has s a long-standing interest in twentieth-century military history and has travelled extensively through Northern Europe\, visiting battlefields\, cemeteries and memorials. At university\, he was a member of his University’s Air Squadron; the RAF taught him how to fly an aeroplane. Later\, after moving to London\, he joined the TA\, where the army tried to teach him how to jump out of one. \nThe Lines We Cross is his first novel\, but he has co-authored over forty scientific publications as well as nine Master’s theses\, all hopefully considered as non-fiction! \nJulian is currently working on the sequel to The Lines We Cross as well as a travel book. \nThis book will be launched on the 6th November and available from the Oundle Bookshop after this date\, and at the event.
